Kansas City Chiefs select Xavier Worthy in first round of 2024 NFL Draft

The Chiefs have added the fastest player in the entire NFL Draft with their first selection in this year’s class.

For the second time in three draft classes, the Kansas City Chiefs have decided to move up in the first round to climb up draft boards, jump over other teams, and lay claim to a prospect they didn’t want to miss out on.

This year, that prized player was wide receiver Xavier Worthy.

The Chiefs ended up trading with the Buffalo Bills at No. 28 overall, a move up four spots from their original spot at No. 32. The terms of the official deal are that the Chiefs traded picks No. 32, 95 and 221 to Buffalo for No. 28, 133, and 248.

The Chiefs have added the fastest player in the entire NFL Draft with their first selection in this year’s class.

With the selection of Worthy, the Chiefs make their much-anticipated move at wide receiver in order to bolster a position that has suffered significant losses in recent years due to the trade of Tyreek Hill, the lack of development in some draft picks, and the loss of vets in free agency.

Worthy is the fastest player in the entire draft class who set a record during the NFL Combine with a time of 4.21 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Worthy now gives the Chiefs a dynamic new deep threat to go with fellow newcomer Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who signed a single-season deal as a free agent, to go with tight end Travis Kelce and second-year wideout Rashee Rice.

Last season, Worthy had 75 catches for 1,014 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns last year for the Texas Longhorns.

The move to trade with the Bills was a bit of a surprise, at least the franchise involved, since both teams have become rivals in recent years as contenders in the AFC, but apparently Buffalo wasn’t too concerned about helping the Chiefs acquire someone they want to chase.

The last time the Chiefs traded up was back in the 2022 NFL Draft when they held back-to-back first-round choices at the end of the first round—at Nos. 29 and 30 overall. That year, general manager Brett Veach moved up 8 spots in the draft in order to grab Washington cornerback Trent McDuffie in a deal with the New England Patriots.

The Chiefs still have six picks remaining in this year’s draft class:

  • Round 2 – No. 64 overall
  • Round 3 – No. 131
  • Round 4 – No. 133
  • Round 5 – No. 159
  • Round 5 – No. 173
  • Round 7 – No. 248
