Draft night in the NFL always throws out a few surprises. Players rise and fall, while teams make unusual selections that have significant ramifications for the future.
But more than a few eyebrows were raised when the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills — who have been AFC rivals for several years — pulled off a draft day trade in April that saw a coveted prospect find his way to KC.
That prospect, Xavier Worthy, has turned heads at Chiefs training camp — and before he has even taken an NFL snap, the “Madden” video game series has rated him as having 98 speed (out of 99). Worthy is in the ascendancy, and no doubt Patrick Mahomes is silently thanking the Bills for their “gesture of goodwill.”
Chiefs fans on social media are doing it out loud.
Worthy prompts disbelief
Worthy set a new record in the 40-yard dash at the draft combine prior to his selection by the Chiefs with the 28th overall pick in the draft. Kansas City acquired that pick in the first place by agreeing to a trade with Buffalo — which agreed to move down to 33rd overall to select another wide receiver, Keon Coleman.
While Coleman has impressed Buffalo and its star quarterback Josh Allen, strengthening the Chiefs surely was not Bills general manager Brandon Beane‘s intent. After all, Worthy has put together a training camp highlight reel that is already eliciting comparions to former Chiefs star Tyreek Hill.

Worthy’s stellar camp has seen Chiefs fans on social media offer mock gratitude to the Bills for their “benevolence,” with some expressing pure disbelief that Mahomes can count yet another speedster among his offensive weapons. And with “friends” like those in Buffalo, Kansas City stands a better chance of making NFL history with a Super Bowl three-peat.
