KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is one of the greatest assistant coaches in NFL history. On Tuesday, he finally was given an award to recognize him for that.
Spagnuolo, who has been the defensive coordinator for three Chiefs Super Bowl wins and the New York Giants 2007 victory over the undefeated New England Patriots, was voted as one of two Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman Award winners by the Professional Football Writers of America.
The award is given for lifetime achievement as an NFL assistant coach. Spagnuolo and Titans offensive line coach Bill Callahan are the 24th and 25th recipients of the award, which began in 2014.
Spagnuolo has spent five seasons in Kansas City, arriving in 2019 after the Chiefs had a historically poor defense the year prior.
He’s the only coordinator in NFL history to win a Super Bowl with multiple franchises.
During the playoff run to Kansas City’s third Super Bowl win in the past five seasons, members of the Chiefs vaunted defense debuted “In Spags We Trust” t-shirts in honor of the 64-year-old coordinator.
