KANSAS CITY, Mo. —
Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has responded to comments made by ESPY host Serena Williams.
Williams had some choice words for kicker Butker during the awards ceremony.
Her sister, Venus, and actress Quinta Brunson joined the tennis great as they discussed the rising interest and passion in women’s sports.
“Go ahead and enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports,” Venus Williams said, “Because they are sports.”
Serena Williams followed with, “Except you, Harrison Butker. We don’t need you.”
In comments made to NBC Sports, Butker said sports are “supposed to be the great unifier.”
“Sports are supposed to be the great unifier and at an event dedicated to celebrating a diverse group of men and women who have accomplished great feats, she used it as an opportunity to disinvite those with whom she disagrees with from supporting fellow athletes,” Butker said. “I thought Mrs. Williams was a great host and applaud her for using her platform to express her beliefs on a variety of topics.”
