The Chiefs have dominated the Chargers with such ease in recent years that it’s hard to even call it a rivalry, but things are looking up for Los Angeles with Jim Harbaugh coming to town with a revamped roster.

While some things change though, others stay the same.

Undrafted rookie free agent linebacker Luquay Washington looked like he was heading to the Chargers, but reportedly changed his mind and will now join the two-time defending Super Bowl champions instead.

The 6’3″, 230 LB defender out of Central Connecticut joins a suddenly deep position group in Kansas City and projects as a potential special teams contributor while he learns the nuances of the professional game.

Washington doesn’t have a sparkling profile overall, but he could grow into a valuable contributor. He had seen sacks over his college career with three interceptions and a pair of forced fumbles, showcasing the kind of versatility that Steve Spagnuolo covets.

Perhaps most importantly, he could be a contributor on special teams. Dave Toub’s units routinely rank among the best in the NFL, so any player that could make a difference there is worth a shot.

No matter how you look at the transaction, it’s a positive that Washington is now with the Chiefs and not the Chargers. Whether he makes the roster or not, he’s chosen the better organization to develop with long-term.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see more players choose this route. The rich get richer, as they say, and Kansas City’s wealth is overflowing at this point.
